Welcome to Year One!
Miss Cornelius, Ms Eastman and Mrs Deutrom
In Year 1 we introduce the children to the National Curriculum. They follow a structured programme developing independence in their work and play. We aim to provide a safe, secure and most of all a happy environment for every individual child.
Children are taught Phonics at least four times a week. It is during this time where the children learn the essential sounds that enable us to read and write. We study English and Maths daily, and foundation subjects (Science, History, Geography, Music and RE) are taught once a week. Foundation subjects are taught during the afternoon sessions where the children enjoy using a variety of resources to help incorporate learning and fun, and provide exciting opportunities to further their natural inquisitive side. Science is taught in a variety of ways including practical investigations, hands on activities and use of the interactive whiteboard. Topics include plants, animals, ourselves, light and dark, the environment and materials. Also, the children have one hour a week with our PE specialist to enrich their physical development.
Homework is given out every Wednesday and collected in on Mondays, along with their reading records. Every week we have star of the week where the children enjoy taking ‘Nayla’, our class teddy, home for a weekend and recording her adventures in a class scrapbook.
We have been learning about Autumn. We hope you enjoy our song!
International Day 2016 – Egypt
We have learnt so much about the Egyptians this week and produced some fantastic piece of work. Below is our ‘Amazing Egyptians’ song, which I am incredibly impressed with! The children performed it brilliantly. Well done Year One.
